RECURRING LESSONS (Ages 4–18)

Enrollment Steps:

To begin lessons, all four steps must be completed:
-
Review Studio Policy – Read this document carefully
-
Meet & Greet Session –(Billed only if the family chooses to continue)
-
Reserve a Recurring Lesson Time – Commit to a consistent weekly slot.
-
Set Up Payment – Complete payment setup through Fons (or Zelle/Venmo/PayPal if preferred).
✅ A student is officially enrolled only when all four steps are completed.
Prerequisites
-
Students should be genuinely interested in learning music and willing to play regularly. Please do not enroll children who are not motivated enough to practice consistently.
-
Some children are curious about piano but not yet ready to commit to lessons. In that case, I suggest trying an app such as Piano Maestro or Simply Piano first. These are fun, low-commitment ways to explore music. While they don’t replace a teacher, they can give families a clearer sense of whether lessons will be a good fit before we begin working together.
-
Students must have regular access to a piano.
-
Acoustic pianos are ideal, but digital pianos with hammer action are also acceptable, especially for beginners.
-
Semi-weighted or spring-action keyboards are not acceptable.
-
I offer support and advice to families looking to purchase or upgrade a piano — please ask if you need guidance.
-
-
Ages 5–18: Students should practice at least 5 times per week.
-
Parents are expected to facilitate practice, especially for young children, actively. This means reviewing assignments and engaging—not just saying “go practice.”
-
Unlike sports or other after-school activities that don’t require work at home, piano lessons always come with practice assignments. Parents should plan for this.
-
-
Ages 4–6: A parent should attend lessons first, for at least the first two months.
-

-
Students enrolling are committing to tuition through the semester/school year.
Expectations

Students
-
Practice regularly — even 10 focused minutes counts.
-
Take ownership: ask questions, make mistakes, enjoy the process.
-
Treat yourself and others with respect.
-
No eating or chewing gum during lessons.
-
Bring a closed water bottle.
Parents
-
Create a calm, encouraging practice environment.
-
Stay current with studio communication.
-
Ensure consistent lesson attendance.
-
Keep tuition payments timely.
Tuition & Schedule
-
Parents receive monthly invoices covering all lessons during Portland Public Schools’ academic calendar (PPS in-session days).
-
If PPS is in session (Teachers are working), you are billed for the lesson—no exceptions.
-
Prior to vacations or breaks, families will be asked if they want to schedule extra lessons outside of the regular calendar.
-
Payment is due before the first lesson of each month.
-
Families who struggle to pay on time should use credit card payment via Fons.
-
Tuition secures the student’s reserved weekly time as well as teacher preparation and use of the studio library.
Rates
-
$30 per 30-minute lesson, $45 per 45-minute lesson, $60 per 60-minute lesson
Absences, Rescheduling & Cancellations
-
Illness/Weather: Send practice recordings; remote lessons offered when possible. No refunds for missed lessons.
-
Courtesy Rescheduling: May be offered at Shlomo’s discretion.
-
Teacher Cancellation: Refund or credit provided.
-
Missed Lessons: No refunds, but feedback may be given via recordings.
Summer & Recitals
-
Summer lessons are scheduled separately. Enrollment does not automatically continue after the school year. During the summer, we don’t have to commit to a recurring time.
-
Recital details announced in advance; a small fee may apply.
Unenrollment
-
Ideally occurs at semester or school-year end.
-
Advance notice ensures a smooth wrap-up and allows the schedule to stay full.
Materials & Apps
-
Tuition does not cover copyrighted sheet music. Students/parents must purchase required materials.
-
Free stock music will be provided when possible; if this doesn’t motivate your child, parents are responsible for buying music that does.
-
Students may borrow music, but I want it back when you’re done (it often gets lost in piano benches!).
-
Studio books available for purchase; prices listed inside covers.
Recommended Apps
-
Piano Maestro, Simply Piano, Piano Marvel, Rhythm Swing, EarMaster
Games by Shlomo
-
Rhythm Train-er, Musical Hopscotch, Ice Cream Chords
